  Tyler’s Transformation

Since Tyler Hayward was three years old he has been pushed into sports. When he showed promise in baseball, it became his life. When he hit the pros, it became all about his image. He even committed the ultimate betrayal of the one he loved to present himself as “normal."

Until the night it all became too much and he had to break away or end it all. But his freedom is short lived as life throws him a another curve when a car runs a red light and he is forced to fight for everything he has ever known.

Graham Conner has been watching Tyler for the last couple of weeks and has decided that there’s more to the baseball player than what the tabloids report. Taking him home to his ranch, the kinky cowboy shows Tyler that baseball isn’t everything life has to offer. And Tyler finds he loves every minute of it.

  Chapter One

Tyler Hayward knew that at any moment he was going to have a heart attack. Then he was going to puke up all the little bacon wiener things Vanessa had put on a plate and told him to eat. He was standing in a room full of strangers, many who called themselves family and friends. In the corner was a group of vultures that made up the members of the press. Even his agent was here, all waiting for the big announcement.

“Oh, Tyler, this is so exciting! I can’t believe that it’s finally happening. We did it!” Janis Hayward wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him tight.

“I know, Mom. You and Dad are finally getting what you worked so hard for.” Tyler patted his mother on the back. She had backed off for a while after his brother’s partner was in an accident, but now she was back to pushing him and trying to run every part of his life again.

“Tyler Hayward, don’t you try and say it isn’t exciting to be nominated for the MVP award in professional baseball,” Janice reprimanded. “In a few minutes, you could be the most valuable player for the whole season. That is a huge achievement. I knew everything would work out for the best.”

“Yeah, you’re right, Mom.” Tyler unwrapped his mother’s arms from around his waist and walked away.

His whole life, up to this point, had been shaped and created to lead to this moment. When he was young, his parents had Tyler and his older brother Brad playing in every sport that existed. His little brother Brian had been born premature and was very small, so they left him alone. His sister, Stephanie, played in some sports, but she had always been closer to Brian than the rest of the family.

When it became apparent that his talents were in baseball, his life became baseball. As he grew older, he ate, played, practiced, dreamed, and slept baseball. He loved it. But everything changed when he made it to the pros. Not only did he have to play well, he suddenly had to worry about his image and the press. Tyler hired an agent, and then things really got crazy when the big money was involved.

If Tyler had his way, he would play baseball and then go home to Tony. But, as his mom had drilled into him, that could never be. So Tyler had broken both their hearts. Now Tyler was trapped in an elegant hotel suite, watching everyone drink and talk excitedly about the fact that, in a few moments, it could be announced that he was this year’s MVP of baseball’s National League.

Between his meddling mother and the beautiful fake woman walking across the room toward him, the rest of his life was planned out. Tomorrow they had an appointment at the jewelers to pick out her engagement ring. The elaborate wedding plans had al
ready begun. The problem with the whole fiasco was that he hadn’t even asked her to marry him in the first place. He didn’t want and never would want to marry her.

“Tyler, come over by the windows. They will make a great backdrop for the pictures of us together when the announcement is made.” Vanessa wrapped her blood-red talons around his arm and pulled him over by the windows that made up an entire wall of the room. Tyler could see all the lights of the city, twinkling in the darkness, making a beautiful background for the pictures that Vanessa wanted. He had to admit the model knew how to get the most out of each picture of them together. Hell, she made it an art form.

Richard Water’s cellphone rang and the entire room stopped moving. As his agent answered the phone, he walked over to where Tyler and Vanessa were standing.

Tyler watched the man’s face as he answered and then spoke into the phone. There were a few yeses and ah-has, then Richard ended the call and turned to Tyler.

“I’m sorry, Tyler, Craig Clausen took it.”

Tyler felt Vanessa’s claws dig into his arm and on the other side of the room, he heard his mother’s protest. The rest of the people froze for a few moments and then fake smiles were plastered on their faces. Forced laughter filled the room. Slowly each of them made their way over to Tyler and gave him their condolences. Tyler felt like he was at a funeral, and worse yet, the funeral was his own. Then he realized he wished it was.

That was the moment Tyler Hayward decided to bury everyone else’s expectations and live his own life. It was either that, or the next stop really would be in a casket.

“I can’t believe you lost,” Vanessa whispered. Tyler could feel her warm breath against his ear. He absently wondered if he looked like he was bleeding. All of that red lipstick caked on her mouth had to be leaving marks. “If you want me to stick around after this, you better dig a lot deeper into your pockets at the jewelry store tomorrow.”

“Oh my darling, it isn’t fair. You deserve to be the MVP. I can’t believe they picked someone else.” Janice Hayward grabbed Tyler’s free arm, clutching it tightly. “I think it’s time to talk to your trainer and start a new regimen. Step things up, so that they can’t possibly pass you up next year. And PR, I think we should start paying a public relations representative.”

Tyler looked down at the two women, each clinging to an arm. Both were demanding things from him that he would no longer do. No more. No way. He was done.

Tyler studied Vanessa Clarkson as she stood there glaring at him, like the whole situation was his fault. He had to admit she was stunningly good looking, but he also knew she was the end product of elaborate blonde hair dye, breast implants and facial reconstruction—hell, even her butt had silicone in it. For just a half second he wondered what she really looked like. Then he realized he didn’t really care.

“Vanessa, there isn’t going to be any trip to a jewelry store tomorrow. If you want to accept a ring from someone, accept it from my mother. She’s the one that must have asked you to get married, because it sure wasn’t me.” Tyler didn’t even flinch when both sets of nails dug deeper into his arms. Tyler turned toward the angry woman he was not going to marry. “We are done. Keep all the jewelry. Hell, keep the car for all I care. I’ll have all the stuff you left at my apartment packed up and sent to yours.”

“Tyler, you can’t do this to me,” Vanessa screeched in outrage. “I gave you almost a year of my life. I’ve ignored all of the rumors that you’re a queer. I even put up with how bad you are in bed. I have stood at your side and you owe me.”

Tyler stepped closer, bringing their faces mere inches apart. “I owe you nothing.” Then he yanked his arms out of both women’s grasping hooks and turned away. Ignoring the now-shouting woman, he walked toward the door.

Of course, he didn’t make it far before his mother grabbed him again. By the time the night was over, Tyler knew his arms were going to be bruised and bleeding. He decided it would be worth it if he was free of them both.

“Tyler, what do you think you’re doing? Get back there and apologize to Vanessa. What are the papers are going to say?” That was when Tyler noticed the reporters in the corner, pointing their cameras at him.

“Mom, I don’t care what the papers say and I don’t care what anyone thinks.” Tyler turned to face her fully, painfully breaking the hold she had on his arm. Taking both of her upper arms in his hands, he leaned over and looked into her pale-blue eyes, making sure he had her complete attention.

“Listen to me. From now on, I’m going to decide who I see and what I do. Richard and I will be the only ones making any decisions concerning my career.” Tyler gave her arms a slight squeeze when she would have interrupted him. “You and Dad will still be welcome to come to my games, but from now on, it’s only as my parents. No more telling me who I can be seen with or who I can have a relationship with. Mom, you’ve gone too far. This is my life and career, not yours.”

Tyler watched the emotions play over his mother’s face. First there was surprise, then anger, and finally he saw resignation. The problem was that Tyler knew it wouldn’t last. In days, weeks, maybe just hours, she would ignore everything he had just said. She would start interfering in his private life and plan his career again, just like she had done before. Except this time, he wasn’t budging. For the first time in his life, Tyler was going to take complete control.

“Go home, Mom.” He didn’t like speaking to his mom this way, but he knew he couldn’t show any weakness. His mother would always be his mother, until the day he died. But he had to cut the ties she was strangling him with.

This time he didn’t wait to hear anything she had to say. Tyler let her go and didn’t stop until he was standing in front of the elevator doors, waiting for them to open and take him down to the lobby.

“You did good, Tyler. I’ve been hoping for a while that you would decide that it was time to run your own life.” Tyler turned to see Richard standing next to him. He had been so determined to get out of the hotel he hadn’t even noticed that the agent had followed him.

“Are you free to have a meeting in the morning to discuss things?” Tyler asked. “I know we have until March, when spring training starts. But I would like to go over a few things.”

“I think that’s a fantastic idea. It’s time to review your contract and discuss what we want to negotiate in the way of contract extensions.” Richard lightly slapped his back. “See you about nine?”

“Sounds good,” Tyler answered. And it did sound good. He was taking control and it was starting to feel great.

Tyler walked through the lobby and out into the November night, relieved that there were yellow taxis waiting at the curb. He was ready to go back to his apartment and relax. As far as he was concerned, he had had enough of the events of this day.

Tyler climbed into the taxi and gave the driver his address. Settling back into the middle of the seat, he absently watched as the taxi pulled away from the curb.

“Aren’t you Tyler Hayward, the baseball player?” asked the cab driver.

Tyler now noticed the picture identification card hanging by the visor with the name Louis Simpson on it. “Yeah, I am. Nice to meet you Louis.”

That was when Tyler heard the screech and crunch of metal on metal. He was viciously thrown sideways toward the passenger door he had just entered minutes before. Tyler’s head hit the window right before it shattered, propelling shards of glass all over him, slicing his face and hands. Tyler felt his right shoulder slam against the rim of the door just below the window. Then his elbow hit the armrest and pain exploded up and down his arm as something huge was pushing through the door toward him. Tyler knew no more as everything went black.

  Chapter Two

Tyler woke up in what could only be an emergency room. The first thing he realized was that he could only see out of one eye. His face felt stiff, with bandages covering half of it, and his head was pounding in pain. Agony radiated from the whole right side of his upper body. His right ar
m was encased in bandages from his shoulder to the tips of his fingers and wrapped tightly against his chest.

Standing by his bedside were his mom and dad, Richard, and Vanessa. Tyler felt so helpless at that moment. He knew drugs must be soaring through his system because he couldn’t understand what was going on.

“Mr. Hayward, it’s good to see you’ve come back to us. My name is Dr. Mathewson. How are you feeling?” Tyler’s attention was drawn to a dark-haired man with wire-rimmed glasses. Tyler could see he had a stethoscope around his neck and was wearing a white coat. As the doctor stepped up to the side of the bed, the rest moved back, giving the doctor room.

  “Where am I?” he asked.

“You’re at Mercy Hospital’s trauma care unit. You’ve been in a car accident, Mr. Hayward,” the doctor answered.

  “Is Louis okay?” he asked.

  “I’m sorry, I don’t know any Louis.”

“The cab driver, is he okay?”

“Yes, from what I understand, he’s going to be fine.”

“My head and arm hurt.” Tyler was scared to ask outright what was wrong with his arm. The faces of the people behind the doctor told Tyler a lot. His dad’s face held worry and compassion, while his mom looked determined. Richard’s was sympathetic and calculating. Tyler could see Vanessa was coldly aloof, like she was separating herself from the situation.

“I have no doubt that you are in pain, Mr. Hayward.” Tyler’s attention was brought back to the doctor. “You have a concussion and quite a few stiches on your face and hands. From what I understand, the car door window shattered when a car hit the side of your cab. I’m afraid you were cut up pretty bad. Hopefully the scarring will be minimal.”
